According to NBA Insider Shams Charania, the Cleveland Cavaliers have hired former Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings coach Dave Joerger as a coaching consultant.

The Cavs have not officially announced the addition or Joerger. The 49-year-old Joerger was last in the NBA as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers from 2020-23. Before that, he racked up a head coaching record of 245-247 over six season with the Grizzlies and Kings. He also when a D-League (now the G League) title in 2007.

With the Grizzlies, Joerger was known for a defensive minded style as part of that franchises Grit and Grind style. But in Sacramento, where he coached different talent, he encouraged his team (led by De’Aaron F0x) to While he wasn’t the coach to get the Kings back to the playoffs — that was ultimately Mike Brown with help from assistant Jordi Fernandez — there’s some connective tissue in how the Kings played under Joerger and how they are playing now. Considering the Cavs have talked about playing faster this season, that may be where Joerger comes in as a consultant.

Coincidentally, Joerger will be working with the man who replaced him as Kings head coach: Luke Walton. Walton came to Cleveland last season as an assistant on J.B. Bickerstaff’s staff.
