The Dallas Mavericks may start the NBA season without their star player. Luka Doncic is questionable to play in the season opener against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday as he recovers from a left calf strain.

“We don’t know yet, honestly,” Doncic said about his availability after practice on Tuesday. “I’ve been practicing for two days now. So, I feel pretty good, but we’ll see how it feels tomorrow [Wednesday] morning.”

Doncic has been a full participant in practice and says he feels no lingering soreness in the affected calf. Still, the Mavericks are taking extra precautions not to rush Doncic back too soon.

“He did everything the last two days,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ll go through shootaround [on Wednesday] and see how he feels.”

Unfortunately, Doncic isn’t the only player who may miss the opener. Second-year guard Jaden Hardy and veteran center Dwight Powell are also questionable for the opener. Hardy is recovering from a left ankle sprain and was able to participate in practice Tuesday. Powell has an illness.

Dallas did see All-Star guard Kyrie Irving return to the lineup for its final preseason game last Friday. Irving missed the previous two preseason games due to a sore left groin. He’ll be in the starting lineup on Wednesday and appears to be suffering no ill effects from his injury.

“I think Ky’s in a great spot,” Kidd said. “I think physically and mentally he’s ready to go. So, that’s good. You saw that in the last preseason game. I think he played 24 or 25 minutes [and] almost had a triple-double. I think he’s ready to go. If you ask him, I think he’s going to say the same thing. I would say he’s in a good spot.”

Getting the team healthy and ready to start the regular season was one of Kidd’s stated goals for training camp. Things didn’t go as planned. Now, Kidd’s focus shifts to getting the team healthy as the regular season unfolds and incorporating all the new faces.

“That’s just what it is. We’re not going to complain about it. We’re going to be pros about it and figure out a way to win,” Kidd said. “Also, we got a lot of different combinations of new guys involved and understanding what they can do, too. So, there’s a lot with the first 10 games to figure out, but I think we’re in a good spot. But if we can be healthy going into tomorrow [Wednesday] and Friday, that’s always a good thing.”
